How to Do Heatless Curls
Heatless curls set soft waves overnight with no damage. Wrap damp hair around a curling rod, sock, or robe tie, let it dry fully, then unwrap and break up the curls.

The fix
- start on hair that is damp, not soaking, lightly coated with leave-in or mousse
- lay the rod or tie over your head like a headband and wrap sections of hair around it, alternating sides
- secure the ends with a hair tie or clip so nothing slips loose overnight
- let hair dry completely, ideally overnight, before unwrapping
- unwrap gently and separate the curls with your fingers, then set with a little hairspray
If it’s still not right
- If curls fall out fast, the hair was still damp when you unwrapped. Let it dry longer next time.
- If they look too tight or crimped, use bigger sections and a thicker rod.
Prevent it next time
- Wrap before bed so the curls have all night to set.
- Use a silk or satin rod and pillowcase to reduce frizz while you sleep.
Notes
Why this works
Heat is only one way to reshape hair — time and tension work too. When you wrap damp hair around a rod and let it dry, the strands harden into that curled shape with zero heat damage.
The key is patience: unwrapping before the hair is bone-dry is the most common reason heatless curls drop. Wrap before bed, let it set overnight, and separate gently in the morning for soft, lasting waves.
Substitutions
